Rosenborg stun Real Madrid 2-0

TRONDHEIM, Norway, Nov 27- 1997 - Rosenborg Trondheim stunned Real Madrid 2-0 in a Champions League Group D match in bone-chilling temperatures on Thursday and Rosenborg coach Nils Arne Eggen hailed it as the club's greatest victory.

Goals from Roar Strand and Harald Brattbakk in temperatures of minus eight Celsius put on hold Madrid's hopes of qualifying outright for the quarter-finals. Giant-killing Rosenborg are now level with Real Madrid on 10 points at the top of the group but the Spaniards will qualify if they beat Porto at home in their last game. Rosenborg could be one of the two best runners-up if they beat Olympiakos. ``The conditions weren't in our favour,'' Real Madrid coach Jupp Heynckes said of a blanket of frost on the grass pitch that made his players slither around. ``But a team like Real Madrid should be able to handle anything. We had a lot of wasted chances.'' ``Today wasn't our day but I'm convinced we will beat Porto at home in our last match and qualify,'' he said. Real Madrid had hammered a lacklustre Rosenborg 4-1 in Madrid two months ago.
Strand shocked the visitors with a diving headed goal just before halftime when the Spanish team seemed to be gaining the upper hand despite a string of squandered chances. Real had been unlucky not to score minutes earlier when Fernando Ruiz Hierro hit the post with a sizzling free kick low past the defensive wall. Raul blasted the rebound over the bar.
Brattbakk made it 2-0 early in the second half, with a well-placed shot from just inside the penalty area. The goal delighted the packed 19,000 crowd in Brattbakk's last game in the Lerkendal stadium before a planned transfer to Celtic.
Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes, co-leader of the Spanish scoring table with eight goals, hit the crossbar in the second half as Real fought to get back into the game. Predrag Mijatovic also came close to scoring as Real battered against a solid Norwegian rearguard that also looked threatening on the break.
Rosenborg's veteran coach Eggen, for whom the match was a last game at Lerkendal before a one-year break from soccer, said that the game ranked ``number one in Rosenborg's history.'' He said that it even eclipsed a 2-1 victory over an off-form AC Milan last year in the Champions' League. Rosenborg are unbeaten at home in the Champions League this year. ``This was a very even match. Of course it was unusually cold for the Spaniards but it was also cold for us,'' he said. The pitch was covered with a heated tarpaulin until just before the game with the rest of the town under 10 cm of snow. ``We finished better than they did but we probably had as many chances,'' he said. He said he hoped for victory over Olympiakos in Rosenborg's final game in Athens after a 5-1 victory over the Greeks in Norway. ``In Athens we hope the temperature will be above zero. That will help us too,'' he said.

Real Madrid to face chilly Rosenborg

OSLO, Nov 26 - Real Madrid, possibly with a 16-year-old goalkeeper, will have freezing weather against them as well as Rosenborg Trondheim when they try to clinch a place in the European Cup quarter-finals on Thursday.

Real clobbered the Norwegian champions 4-1 at home in September and were unlucky not to score many more against a disorganised side. They need just one point from Thursday's Champions League Group D match to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

But temperatures in Trondheim are forecast to be well below zero at Lerkendal stadium on Thursday night, with snow on the ground outside the stadium. The pitch will be uncovered just before the game.``If they focus too much on this, it's obviously very positive for us,'' said captain Bent Skammelsrud after Madrid players said they rated the cold a bigger opponent than Rosenborg.

Skammelsrud said Greece's Olympiakos and Porto of Portugal had both worried too much about the weather before their Champions' League games. Both lost, 5-1 and 2-0, leaving Rosenborg with a chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

Sixteen-year old Real Madrid youth team player Iker Casillas had a shock on Tuesday when he was called out of his schoolroom and asked to catch the first plane to Norway as a reserve. First-choice goalkeeper Santiago Canizares was winded by a collision with Fernando Morientes in training but is expected to be fit for the game. ``I thought it was a joke when they told me,'' said Casillas.

Coach Jupp Heynckes has brought back midfielder Ze Roberto after nearly two months' absence, but has left out another Brazilian, defender Roberto Carlos, who is recovering from an ankle injury picked up in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao. Real Madrid defender Christian Panucci is also out injured.

Heynckes surprisingly opted to leave Davor Suker in Spain. The Croatian striker is not injured, but he has been asked to work on his fitness ahead of the next Spanish league game. ``I think it's much better he stays there to train to get to Sunday in good shape,'' Heycnkes said. Suker's substitute will be Morientes, whose equaliser on Saturday left him as co-leader of the Spanish scoring table with eight goals.

Thursday's game will be the last at home for Rosenborg coach Nils Arne Eggen, who has run the club for 10 years. He plans to retire after the last game of the Champions' League, away against Olympiakos. Rosenborg forward Harald Brattbakk will also be playing his final game in front of home fans before a likely transfer to Celtic. Jahn Ivar ``Mini'' Jakobsen, who missed Rosenborg's last match against Porto because of yellow cards, will be back despite a cold that kept him in bed for two days last week.
